ASTM A333 specifies seamless and welded carbon and alloy steel pipes designed for low-temperature applications. These pipes are manufactured using either the seamless or welding process, with no filler metal added during welding. To ensure the desired microstructure, all pipes undergo a specific treatment process.
This standard includes several grades of ferritic steel: Grade 1, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8, Grade 9, Grade 10, and Grade 11. Of these, Grade 6 is the most widely used. In this article, we will provide an in-depth look at ASTM A333 low-temperature seamless steel pipes.

For all seamless and welded pipes produced to ASTM A333 specifications, except Grades 8 and 11, heat treatment must be applied to control microstructure through one of the following methods:
a. Normalization: Heat to a uniform temperature of no less than 1500 °F [815 °C] and cool either in air or within a controlled atmosphere furnace. Alternatively, normalize as described and, at the manufacturer's discretion, reheat to a suitable tempering temperature.
b. Seamless Pipes Only: Reheat and manage hot working processes so that the finishing temperature ranges between 1550 and 1750 °F [845 to 945 °C], and then cool in air or within a controlled atmosphere furnace from an initial temperature of no less than 1550 °F [845 °C]. Alternatively, treat as described and, at the manufacturer's discretion, reheat to a suitable tempering temperature.
c. Grades 1, 6, and 10: Heat to a uniform temperature of no less than 1500 °F [815 °C], followed by quenching in liquid and then reheating to a suitable tempering temperature.
For ASTM A333 Grade 8 pipe, heat treatment must be performed by either quenching and tempering or double normalization and tempering. For Grade 11, when required, the pipe must be annealed and then normalized in the temperature range of 1400 to 1600 °F [760 to 870 °C].
