ASTM A209 and ASME SA209 outline the standards for several grades of seamless carbon-molybdenum alloy steel boiler and superheater tubes. These specifications cover tubes with outside diameters ranging from 1/2 to 5 inches [12.7 to 127 mm] and a minimum wall thickness of 0.035 to 0.500 inches [0.9 to 12.7 mm]. This article discusses the specifics of ASTM A209 boiler steel pipes.

Tests for A209 Boiler Steel Pipes
- Flattening Test
The flattening test, as specified in Specification A999/A999M, must be conducted on a specimen from one or both ends of each pipe. Crop ends may be used for this test. If this supplementary requirement is specified, the number of tests per pipe must also be specified. One flattening test is required on specimens from each end of one finished tube (not the one used for the flaring test) from each lot.
- Flaring Test
One flaring test must be conducted on specimens from each end of one finished tube (not the one used for the flattening test) from each lot.
- Hydrostatic or Nondestructive Electric Test
Each tube must undergo either the nondestructive electric test or the hydrostatic test. The choice of test is at the manufacturer’s discretion unless otherwise specified in the purchase order.
- Bend Test
Pipes with a diameter exceeding NPS 25 and a diameter-to-wall thickness ratio of 7.0 or less must undergo the bend test instead of the flattening test. Other pipes with a diameter equal to or exceeding NPS 10 may be subjected to the bend test instead of the flattening test, subject to purchaser approval.
